Russell J. Matthes, 85, of 1017 S.E. 46th Lane, Cape Coral, Fla., died Thursday at Cape Coral Hospital following a long illness.

He was born April 29, 1898, in Mansfield and lived here most of his life.  Mr. Matthes was owner and operator of the Crescent Cafe on South Park Street and a developer of Rolling Knolls Allotment in Springmill Township.  He was a life member of Elks Lodge 56.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Town Matthes, and several nephews.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Hart Matthes.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors by Rev. Carl Cunfer, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.  Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery.
